Windows 10 Upgrade Is Still ... Free!
Microsoft, the people behind Office 365 for small business, has ceased their free offer to upgrade to Windows 10. But for those who missed the said offer, this may be a rather good news for you — if you want to take advantage of it, of course.
The End Is Nigh … Or Is It?
The software giant recently announced that although the free upgrade offer for Windows 7 and 8.1 users ended last Friday, users of assistive technologies — techs that offer features such as a magnifier to clearly view the screen, a narrator for reading text aloud, keyboard shortcuts and an on-screen keyboard — can still avail of the free deal even after the general public deadline expires as Microsoft intends to improve the experience for people who use these technologies.However, this provided a backdoor for some unscrupulous users. By just downloading the executable file from their somewhat hidden accessibility website, users can then initiate the upgrade process just like the ones distributed by the recently-ended free upgrade offer. After doing all the installation processes and once the setup polishes everything, voila! Welcome to Windows 10.
Unknown Lapse or Deliberate Plan?
For any customers, having upgraded to Windows 10 can make more sense too, since Microsoft has released their second and most notable Anniversary Update on their OS since its launch, offering more neat features. For the benefit of some, Microsoft still has yet to declare when it will close up its upgrade offer for assistive technology customers. However, the company spokesperson stated that a public announcement will be made before it ends.Although this may be a godsend for some users who missed out on the deadline, some IT Services Australia speculated that this is just an oversight by Microsoft wherein the “Upgrade Now” button redirects to an Update Assistant Tool version that doesn’t check for any assistive technology, rather than linking to a version that seemingly checks for it. So if you are downloading an Update Assistant Tool from the site, verify if the file is titled “Windows10Upgrade9252.exe” or “Windows10Upgrade24074.exe.” If it ends in 24074, you can go about your business.
While some may think of it as a mere error, others thought that this is just another ruse by the software giant. By having it shown like an oversight, those that are still opting out for another feature may end updating their devices before the opportunity fades away. So for now, you can still grab Windows 10 if you missed it out, albeit in an unethical way.
